Communication On The Go

Communication on the go is a must for anyone that does business today and many people globally use Skype as alternative to expensive international calling. When traveling especially for quick get-aways many times cell phone service is non existent or spotty at best

The fact that someone can see and talk to someone on the other side of the world has  made Skype a favorite of a variety of businesses and individuals world wide. There is something about the ability to see someones face while talking to them. It can give an added edge in negotiation and trust between people in a business deal and anyone that travels knows the value of being able to stay in touch with family and friends. Yes, Skype is a marvel invention of our time, but there are times when you are traveling light and only have room for necessities. You don’t want to have duplicate items that do the same thing and want to be able to cram as much as you can into as small a space as possible.

People who travel find it very convenient to put files , documents, browsers, email clients, passwords and other information on a handy little thing called a flash drive. Like many other software and applications with just a couple of changes  Skype can be made to operate from a flash drive and will have all the capabilities as if it were installed on the main drive of a a computer.  Making Skype travel size requires the newest version of Skype which you can download for free here: http://tinyurl.com/danaddiamondcallsww and a Windows Operating System.

  • First install the NEWEST version of Skype and install as normal.
  • Find your Skype.exe file usually in your program files on C Drive Skype\Phonne\Skype.exe
  • Copy the file to any directory on your USB drive. I have a Folder  called Programs_E drive\Skype
  • Create a directory called “data”
  • In Notepad create a file called “skype.bat”
  • Edit the “skype.bat” file and place the line skype.exe /datapath:”Data /removable [There is a space before the forward slash lines and no space after the slash lines.]

That’s it!

Just click on the batch file and it will run Skype. It will be a different version from what you have, but will run even if another computer doesn’t have Skype installed so you can use it from anywhere you have access to a computer.

I haven’t tried it yet on a memory card for my camera, but because I travel with my camera and plug it into computers to download pictures I don’t see why it wouldn’t run Skype if installed there and I have access to a computer running Windows.

If anyone has any thing to add or has tried installing to a camera memory card please leave a comment below.
