Fonts…How Do I Deal With All Those Downloaded Fonts?

If you are like a lot of people that like to do graphics you probably have found yourself downloading an enormous amount of fonts and Dingbats { fonts that are actually images or pictures} to use. The problem is one day you will see they are out of control and slowing your computer.

According to Microsoft you can have about a 1000 fonts installed but anything over 300 really slows down your computer, not to mention the large graphics stored in pictures or animations. If you do not have a file system set up for font an picture management, you need to set one up.

Create a folder for each type of picture for example you can make one for all those pretty tiles for backgrounds. I separate them by large and small and the strips of gradient color each in a folder.

Corner

Corner

Corners, bars, supplies which are actually small elements or scraps and I have organized {well, not so well] by type like Vintage, Oriental, Holidays {you get the picture}. I also like to have my uninstalled Fonts in my picture files to plan a project as well.  Then when I need something I just go to where I have them stored and pich out what I need easily to open or view.  I like to have as much of my materials on my external Flash Drive as my computer is older and even with upgraded Hard Drive and Memory uses a lot of CPU’s. By the way defraging your computer regularly will help the speed.

What I recently found was I didn’t use many of the install fonts in my windows files very often and I never could find the perfect font I was searching for with all my fonts in my folders. Each time I had to open the view fonts with windows thingy and then I forgot which font was which font after looking at several candidates.

Somewhere a long time ago I remebered I downloaded a font explorer, but of course never installed it. I looked in my free program downloads folder and low and behold there it was waiting for me. Before I installed it I went again to the site and found there was another program that really went hand in hand with the font explorer so I downloaded it as well and installed them both.

Wow, I thought how cool is this. All the wasted time and frustration { usually late at night, that’s when I do my best work} could have been avoided.

The software I’m talking about is Font Explorer and Shell Tools. It’s free and it is great! You can get it here:

http://www.moonsoftware.com or

http://www.softpedia.com/developer/Moon-Software-1216.html

This is what the author posted on his site About:

http://www.moonsoftware.com/about.asp

Moon Software was founded in 1996 by me, Ahto Tanner, and is still basically a single-guy company. I’m located in Estonia (Europe). I hope you don’t mind that elsewhere on this site I often say “we” (as a company) and not “I”.

I’m not going to bait you with long made up “success story” of “our company” and why “we are the best” here. I just hope that when using my software you feel the attention to detail that I have put into my programs, and that is why you like it. Also, I must confess that I feel a bit guilty that I don’t update my software as frequently as some of you would like, however, I can promise that every new major release is at the next level in functionality and detail.

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you can always use any of my programs without hesitation, that it will somehow “break” your computer. 🙂

After I Googled Ahto,  I found he is a very talented guy his pictures are shown here:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rebaseonu/ and  http://www.flickr.com/people/rebaseonu/

It’s really nice to know there are people out there freely giving of themselves. Just when you think the world has gone to Hell in a Hand Basket a life saver comes along and  I thought it was nice that he said not to worry about breaking your computer.

The only problem I found is when you pull up the moonsoftware.com  site,  sometimes there are problems connecting. I think it is because it is Europe and the links are not so strong or they could be old. As far as the software it is really wonderful and what a time saver. I haven’t tried to email yet but the developer and author can be reached :  ahto@moonsoftware.com

Communication On The Go

Communication on the go is a must for anyone that does business today and many people globally use Skype as alternative to expensive international calling. When traveling especially for quick get-aways many times cell phone service is non existent or spotty at best

The fact that someone can see and talk to someone on the other side of the world has  made Skype a favorite of a variety of businesses and individuals world wide. There is something about the ability to see someones face while talking to them. It can give an added edge in negotiation and trust between people in a business deal and anyone that travels knows the value of being able to stay in touch with family and friends. Yes, Skype is a marvel invention of our time, but there are times when you are traveling light and only have room for necessities. You don’t want to have duplicate items that do the same thing and want to be able to cram as much as you can into as small a space as possible.

People who travel find it very convenient to put files , documents, browsers, email clients, passwords and other information on a handy little thing called a flash drive. Like many other software and applications with just a couple of changes  Skype can be made to operate from a flash drive and will have all the capabilities as if it were installed on the main drive of a a computer.  Making Skype travel size requires the newest version of Skype which you can download for free here: http://tinyurl.com/danaddiamondcallsww and a Windows Operating System.

  • First install the NEWEST version of Skype and install as normal.
  • Find your Skype.exe file usually in your program files on C Drive Skype\Phonne\Skype.exe
  • Copy the file to any directory on your USB drive. I have a Folder  called Programs_E drive\Skype
  • Create a directory called “data”
  • In Notepad create a file called “skype.bat”
  • Edit the “skype.bat” file and place the line skype.exe /datapath:”Data /removable [There is a space before the forward slash lines and no space after the slash lines.]

That’s it!

Just click on the batch file and it will run Skype. It will be a different version from what you have, but will run even if another computer doesn’t have Skype installed so you can use it from anywhere you have access to a computer.

I haven’t tried it yet on a memory card for my camera, but because I travel with my camera and plug it into computers to download pictures I don’t see why it wouldn’t run Skype if installed there and I have access to a computer running Windows.

If anyone has any thing to add or has tried installing to a camera memory card please leave a comment below.

If Patience Is A Virtue

If patience is a virtue I am becoming virtuous. Any one that has had a pet knows the heartbreak associated with loosing a pet and I am no stranger to having lost a pet. Over my lifetime I have had a variety of pets and have to admit was not the best at taking care of them but I learned some where along the way just how special and precious a pet can be in ones life.

I had a mouse as a child that dried up because I forgot about him. Cats, one of which got hit by a car while I was shopping for my Mother. A turtle my uncle caught at Lake Meade in Ohio that I boiled in the sink because I thought he was cold and another turtle I found trying to scurry to safety during a hurricane that ended up in the Palm Beach Zoo. Oh yes I have had my share of animals but none like Brewster a half Maltese and half Poodle I insisted was first generation Bichon Frise. He was  the true love of my life and loyal companion and he taught me the Real meaning of patience.

I’ll never forget the day I went o pick out a puppy from a litter that was advertised in the paper. There were many in the litter and most all running around biting and chewing and playing then I noticed one of the bigger pups trying to hide his little brother under the couch. You see Brewster was the smallest tiniest little creature and surely would have gotten hurt from the rough and tumble from the other siblings. I gently pushed his big brother away and picked up the little lad and he looked at me like please take me out of here with his great big green, yes I said green eyes. He was so tiny and barely seven weeks old, but very trusting and from then on became the real love of my life.

We weathered some pretty rocky times and he was always there to lick the tears from my eyes when I cried and took delight when I laughed. We romped and played and with him I was a little girl again teasing and taunting each other. Oh how he would talk back to me and boss me around.  At night when he was ready to go to bed he would stand in front of the television and bark demanding I turn it off and go to bed and when I would hush him finally he would crawl up next to me and patiently wait till the show was over I was watching. Some times when he had to go PEE and I was watching a show I would tell him to”wait for the commercial” and he knew when the commercials came on that was the time to tell me had to go out to go. He was a very fast learner and mastered controlling me, though I always thought I was the boss, he really had me wrapped around his little paw. In 2006 he traveled with me all throughout the United States and I will never forget the first time he saw a horse while in Amish country he clung to me so tightly pressing against me as I held him while they drove by in the carriage. He got to go up to a friendly one in a field and nose to nose found out they were not out to hurt him. He never forgot. He never forgot the little Hamster he had as his Pet and mourned as did I when little Ashley died and he always patiently waited until I cared for her. Very patiently.. very patiently waited and waited always waited for me.

Once in an early visit to the Vet he picked up that Brewster had a  bad heart and probably would have issues at some point.  I always dismissed it and tried to push it out of my mind, but I always knew some day I would have to face the truth…I would loose him and last night that happened. I was lucky or maybe it was Brewster that I found a wonderful woman Vet near my home that got him started on heart medication…lots of medication and for a year and a half he did pretty well. Congestive heart failure. He began to loose weight in the last couple of months and his hair thinned dramatically and I could see he was failing a little each day. Three times a day he patiently waited for me to give him his pills and patiently I would coax him to take them. I watched to see if he ate and made sure he was drinking water and for a year and half we patiently counted the days until we would part.

If patience is a Virtue then he was the one that had it not I.  He had far more patience than I and now all I have are memories and lessons I learned. Now I have learn to be patient enough to wait until we meet again.

Are You Afraid Of A 4 Letter Word?

Of Course the 4 letter word I am speaking about is S-E-L-L.
I was always afraid of the fact that I didn’t feel like I knew enough about selling until I realized all my years in business I was selling…directly or indirectly. I just usually didn’t collect the money so I didn’t feel like I was actually selling but I most assuredly was selling.

I was selling my time.  I was selling my Talent { I was a hairdresser and a damned good one} I sold my ideas, I sold clothes I designed I sold my image… I really sold!

Because I am an artist at heart I didn’t realize there are only two sides of the coin…You are either buying something or you are selling something.

What are you selling?  Who is your market? Do they want what you have? Can they afford what you have to sell? Where are you selling? What can it do for he buyer? What can it do for you?

D Diamond Holdings Inc Wages War on Windows Live Hot Mail

D Diamond Holdings Inc Wages War on Windows Live Hot Mail
July 31, 2009
By Dana De Fazio

Well, not really, boycott maybe. If you have had experiences with Live Mail from Microsoft like I have, perhaps you would feel the same way. Recently my brother sent me a SAD story about a brother and sister that were affected by a tragic fire in a Wal-Mart store. The little eight year old girl had been badly burnt and Yahoo said they would donate $2.00 for each time the story was forwarded to help the family with their hospital bills for the care of this little girl.

Now I have to admit, I rarely forward these types of things to a list of people but I felt so moved that I emailed almost everyone on my contact list including business associates, friends and family. I use Gmail because I like the fact I have a copy of all emails in case my computer goes down online and never had a problem of my recipients getting their mail promptly.

Everyone on my list got the email except one lonely Hotmail account of which I go a very unfriendly notification from MSN Live Hotmail. The notification stated that because I had complaints against my account they put a block against my IP address and suggested I join their Junk E-Mail Reporting Program (JMRP) a free program intended to help senders remove unwanted recipients from their e-mail list: http://postmaster.live.com.

To say I was speechless is an understatement. I am not and never have been a Spammer. I hate anyone that does that and I contacted that person directly to see if they put in a complaint which they said they did not make a complaint. To have a block against my IP account is just the last straw for Microsoft.

I like many other people have remained loyal to Microsoft since I started using a computer some years ago, but after the last couple of years I am beginning to wonder why.

I kept Windows XP Pro and decided to keep my current computer (Dell Inspiron 8600) and just upgrade memory and hard drive refusing to endure the continuous headaches from Windows Vista my friends have had with the new operating system from Microsoft. Although I have Windows Office Programs installed I can live without them. Open Office. Org has a wonderful suite of programs and with a little practice and a few add-ons one can be just as productive. I would hate to give up my Outlook Express, but even that was revamped by Microsoft and if you like using stationary and adding pictures in the body like I do Live Mail is no improvement.

I may close my Live Mail account, remove MSN Messenger from my computer and email all my contacts that I will not be sending mail to their Hotmail accounts removing them from my contacts list and in general boycott Live Mail. I certainly have had those thoughts. Maybe if enough people begin look to other companies and computing options they’ll get the hint and hear the frustration being voiced against them.

A good alternative is iJango. iJango will offer all registered users a free email address. Their fully customizable homepage is free to use and free to register and will go live tomorrow.

Doing what successful people have done.

By doing what successful people have done to become successful one can only become successful.

The main reason for failure is that people do the same things over and over that produce poor results. Start today to change that. These are the steps many successful people have used that have produced amazing results for them in achieving their dreams.

Make a goals list in your head.

If you don’t have an idea of where you are going you are going no where.

Write down your goals. This is a positive affirmation of what your goals are and remember that if you think it write and see it, these are the three things to make a positive impression on your brain.

Set up deadlines for your goal attainment. If your goal is too big to attain in one giant leap then make sub-deadlines for yourself.
Ex: I want my own Blog
Set up and account.
Gather materials
Make a post

Figure out what are your obstacles in attaining your goals.
ie. time/ knowledge/money

Determine the skills needed to attain your goals.

Ask your self:
Who can you engage to help you with attaining your goals?
Write down everything you need to achieve your goals. Keep in mind the Great Pyramids of Egypt were built stone by stone.

Set up a plan. Organize your steps 1,2,3, etc.
Determine your most important task and start with that each day and keep a clear vision of goal as if it were already achieved. You will be amazed in no time you will have attained your goals or are well on the  way to achieving a long term goal.
